Job Posting — NASSM Executive Director
General Summary
The Executive Director (ED) is an administrative position focused on ensuring all organizational needs are being met in a timely manner. The Executive Director will lead efforts to enhance the operational success of the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) by coordinating the annual conference, cultivating and maintaining a member-centered environment through the collaboration with the Governing Board, Journal of Sport Management (JSM) and Sport Management Education Journal (SMEJ). The Executive Director contributes to the overall success of NASSM by leading and maintaining its operational functions.
The duties of the ED are part-time in nature with expected time commitments around 15 hours per week working remotely July through May and being on-call in person throughout the entirety of the annual conference. Primary, conference, and other responsibilities of the role are detailed below.
Primary Responsbilibities
Schedule, disseminate invites, and attend Governing Board (GB) meetings, the Conference Annual General Meeting (AGM), any Special General Meetings (SGM)
Support the President in the planning of GB meetings
Serve as a non-voting GB member
Receive input from the GB on the desired direction of NASSM
Hire personnel as needed, with GB approval, to help carry out the operational duties of NASSM
Manage the operational duties of key personnel, such as the Archivist, Web Administrator, and Conference Academic Chair
Support administrative duties of the JSM Editor and SMEJ Editor
Ensure the Committees of the Executive Director are operating effectively in accordance with the NASSM Operating Codes
Ensure that all Committees are operating effectively in accordance with the NASSM Operating Codes, including the appointment/election of committee members in accordance with the Operating Codes
Maintain Membership and Conference bank accounts in good standing. Monthly statements shall be made available to the GB
Pay all NASSM expenses
Maintain a permanent address for the NASSM Business Office
Process membership registrations (mostly automated by Memberspace).
Provide membership updates to:
Human Kinetics and pay the associated fee for new members to receive the JSM and SMEJ
TeamWork Online
Marketing and Communications Committee
Conference Responsibilities
Pursue and secure future NASSM conference sites by issuing requests for proposals as authorized by the GB, serving as a resource person for prospective bidders, reviewing bids and negotiating contracts in consultation with the Conference Committee, and making recommendations regarding future sites to the GB
Develop and revise the NASSM Conference bid guidelines and hosting procedures that will enable NASSM to host conferences in conjunction with convention and visitors’ bureaus, or other entities
Negotiate and finalize host site contracts as authorized by the GB
Ensure the GB is informed about and approves modifications in the host site contract
Develop and administer the conference budget as authorized by the GB
Liaise with the Marketing & Communications Committees to announce and provide updates for the annual conference
Provide on-site leadership prior to and during the execution of the conference
Work collaboratively with Academic and Conference Chair on conference reports
Maintain a database of past conference hosts for the purpose of having a resource directory for the Conference Committee and GB
Other Responsibilities
Cooperate with NASSM GB and members of standing committees in distributing Society information
Onboard the incoming President/Vice President in preparation for the pre-conference meeting as a non-voting member
Prepare and present a report of activities to the GB bi-annually
Qualifications
Minimum of Bachelor’s degree; Masters preferred. Those with sport- or business-related fields such as (Sport) Management, (Sport) Marketing, Finance, or Community Relations from an accredited institution are encouraged to apply.
3-5 years of related work experience
2-3 years conference or event management experience
Sufficient level of computer skill proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat
Exceptional organizational, communication, financial, and leadership skills
Flexible, detail oriented, and the ability to manage and thrive in an environment with variable workloads, changing priorities, and timely deadlines
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently
Demonstrated leadership skills, record keeping, data collection, and reporting
Knowledge of Quickbooks
Knowledge of Memberspace/Squarespace and Stripe would be an asset
