NASSM APRIL 2026 SPECIAL AGM
As per the NASSM Constitution (Article V, Section 4), the NASSM Governing Board is providing the membership with at least 30-days advance notice (as of March 27, 2026) of a Special AGM (SAGM)! The meeting link for the SAGM will be posted here, so watch this space!
More details about the SAGM topic will be provided below. Questions? Bring ‘em for the meeting! Only registered NASSM members may access the SAGM and vote on the recommended motion.
-
The SAGM will be hosted on April 29th, 2026 at 1 PM via Zoom or MS Teams, so save the date in the interim!
-
The NASSM Governing Board has approved a motion to acquire the International Journal of Sport Management (IJSM) from American Press. This would mean NASSM would be expanding its knowledge mobilization portfolio to complement Journal of Sport Management (JSM) and Sport Management Education Journal (SMEJ).
JSM is positioned as NASSM’s theoretically advancing research journal outlet, while SMEJ is positioned as the pedagogically advancing outlet. But, there is a gap in housing theoretically-driven/theoretically-applied research, which IJSM helps alleviate.
As this is a matter of significance for the Society, as per Article IV, Section 9 of the Constitution, NASSM members are to vote on the final approval of the acquisition.
The acquisition agreement with American Press (current owners and publishers of IJSM) requires the final approval of the NASSM membership on or before May 31, 2026. Should the NASSM membership vote in favor, Constitutional Amendments to Article VIII, Sections 1 and 2 will be brought forth to the 2026 NASSM AGM in Puerto Rico.
Thus, the recommended motion for this SAGM is as follows:
Be it resolved that the NASSM membership formally ratify the Society’s acquisition agreement of the International Journal of Sport Management. -
There have been recent shifts in the sport management publishing landscape, including acquisitions of journals by large publishing houses. Concurrently, other societies within sport management (e.g., SMAANZ, WASM) have or are actively contemplating the acquisition of journals to their knowledge mobilization portfolios to add more value to their members and generate revenue.
While NASSM has and continues to support JSM as its flagship research outlet, acquiring IJSM will offer more opportunity for NASSM members to publish in a Society supported journal. Furthermore, owning IJSM will assist with financial leverage in future contract discussions with Human Kinetics (owner and publisher of JSM) and/or allow NASSM to generate revenue from IJSM through a publishing agreement with a large publishing house (e.g., Sage, Springer, Wiley).
After consultation with various stakeholders (e.g., Past NASSM Presidents, Sport Management Editors), the NASSM Governing Board discussed the importance of NASSM retaining knowledge mobilization control, whilst simultaneously providing value to its members. After review of all the materials, the NASSM Governing Board voted unanimously on the motion to approve the acquisition of IJSM.
-
NASSM has agreed, subject to the final approval of its members, to purchase IJSM from American Press for $20,000 USD.
The NASSM Governing Board has assessed past financials of IJSM, including its individual and institutional subscriptions. The NASSM Governing Board overwhelmingly agreed that the costs to acquire IJSM were very reasonable, and NASSM would be able to generate profit from this asset in the next 3-4 years. -
Decisions made by the NASSM Governing Board are intended to reflect actionable activities aligned with the NASSM strategic plan (2023-2028).
Consequently, this acquisition aligns with the NASSM strategic plan, specifically two key strategic priorities: (1) Enhancing the value of NASSM membership and (2) Fostering a culture of inclusivity.
By acquiring IJSM, NASSM intends on providing access to IJSM articles past and present to NASSM members, similar to JSM and SMEJ articles, through the NASSM website “Member Space”.
By owning IJSM, NASSM is also creating greater opportunity for NASSM members from R1, R2, and teaching-focused schools to get involved with editorial board membership and the peer-review process!
There is also future potential for NASSM to consider value to its members through awards and distinctions related to IJSM. -
If the NASSM membership does not vote in favor of the acquisition, IJSM may be acquired by another sport management society (e.g., SMAANZ, WASM) or a large publishing house (e.g., Routledge, Sage).
The near term (3-5 year period) will see more mergers and acquisitions in the (sport management) publishing space, and thus this move is prudent for the Society to remain “ahead of the curve”. -
If NASSM ratifies the acquisition of IJSM, no major changes will occur in 2026, aside from working to get NASSM members access to past volumes and issues of IJSM. Here are possible intentions once NASSM owns the asset outright.
The current co-editors of IJSM would remain in their roles until at least June 2027. Editorial board members are also expected to remain in their roles.
In Q3 of 2026, NASSM (through the Governing Board) would seek and execute an agreement with a publishing house to begin hosting and producing articles in 2027.
There is also the possibility of synergy with JSM submissions in ScholarOne, whereby desk rejections to JSM on theoretical advancement grounds, are automatically filtered to IJSM, reducing processing and publishing delays for editorial administrators and authors. -
JSM will remain NASSM’s flagship, theoretically advancing outlet. Adding IJSM will not change JSM’s standing within NASSM.
Past conversations at the NASSM Governing Board-level have considered acquiring JSM from Human Kinetics. Setting aside the fact that JSM is not actively for sale by Human Kinetics, it is unknown whether (1) Human Kinetics would sell JSM to NASSM and not other party and (2) if NASSM could afford the purchase price.
It is, therefore, not in the best interest of NASSM members for the Society to continue to not own a research-based journal and derive the benefits of journal asset ownership and control.

As a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Sport Management at James Madison University, I integrate experiential learning, applied research, and industry partnerships to prepare future sport professionals through high-impact educational models.
My scholarship focuses on emerging issues in sport management, including workforce development, professionalism in global sport industries, and the integration of AI-supported and simulation-based pedagogy. I am actively engaged in national and international research networks, with presentations and service contributions across major sport management conferences and scholarly communities.
In addition, I bring significant leadership experience as General Secretary of the Indian Sport Management Association (INSMA), where I support strategic initiatives to strengthen sport management capacity in developing contexts. This international perspective positions me to contribute meaningfully to NASSM’s continued commitment to diversity, inclusion, and global outreach.
I am especially interested in serving NASSM because it has been central to my professional growth as a scholar and educator. Position Sought: GB Officer
Curriculum Vitae
Statement: I am honored to be considered for a board member position within the North American Society of Sport Management (NASSM). I have been an attendee, committee member, and organizational partner with NASSM since I was a master’s student. I am deeply committed to the sport management academic community, as reflected in receiving the NASSM Research Fellow Award and creating and hosting the State of Sport Management podcast for the past 10 years. I have also been active in securing external funding and collaborating with sport industry partners through my research. Collectively, this work reflects my commitment to strengthening both the theoretical and applied impact of sport management scholarship and advancing the visibility and influence of our field.
NASSM has been central to my professional development. I previously served on the NASSM Student Board, as a conference abstract reviewer, and as a member of the NASSM Student Research Competition Committee (2019). I also served on the NASSM Marketing and Communications Committee for five years. Additionally, my podcast, State of Sport Management, partnered with NASSM to elevate member voices and enhance knowledge translation across the field.

Name: Dr. Seungmin Kang
Institution: North Dakota State University
Position Sought: GB Offier
Curriculum Vitae
Statement: I am an Assistant Professor of Sport Management at North Dakota State University, an R1 institution without a doctoral program and with a fully online master’s program. Working in this context has given me a strong appreciation for the opportunities and constraints faced by colleagues at institutions that may not have extensive graduate infrastructures yet remain actively engaged in research, teaching, and professional service. I understand how governance decisions can influence visibility, access to resources, and sustained engagement for members across diverse institutional settings.
My research on shared leadership and human resource development in nonprofit sport organizations examines how governance structures and leadership practices shape members’ sense of voice, inclusion, and meaningful engagement. This work informs how I approach NASSM as a mission-driven scholarly community that benefits from transparent processes, collaborative leadership, and thoughtful representation across institutional types, career stages, and research areas.
Over the past decade, I have sustained active engagement with NASSM as a regular conference presenter and through service roles including the Distinguished Research Award Review Committee, Joy DeSensi Diversity Award Review Committee, Faculty–Student Mentor, session moderator, and conference manuscript section head and reviewer. Through these roles, I have contributed to award evaluation, diversity recognition, mentorship initiatives, and the peer review process, gaining a comprehensive understanding of NASSM’s governance practices, member engagement structures, and evolving strategic priorities.
Taken together, my institutional context, research expertise in governance and leadership, and sustained service within the NASSM position me to contribute thoughtfully to board deliberations and to support a society that remains responsive to its diverse and evolving membership.

Curriculum Vitae
Statement: I am honored to be considered for NASSM Vice President. My extensive history of engagement with and service to NASSM and experience in academia and the sport industry make me well-positioned to strategically drive to the organization’s future. My commitment to NASSM is reflected in my service to the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, Janet B. Parks Grant Review Committee, Nominating and Human Resource Committee, and Dr. Joy DeSensi Diversity Award for Inclusive Excellence Selection Committee. I am a NASSM Research Fellow and Sport Management Education Journal Fellow. In 2024, I was awarded the Women in NASSM (WIN) Legacy Award. I am currently serving as a special issue guest editor at the Journal of Sport Management.
Beyond NASSM, I have robust leadership experience at all levels of my institution (e.g., chair of undergraduate curriculum and merit committees). I currently serve on Temple University’s Faculty Senate and as the Faculty Athletics Representative. In addition, I have a strong record of mentoring students (e.g., dissertation/thesis committee member). My service commitment also includes strategic industry engagements, most recently with the NCAA.
If elected, I will work diligently to support NASSM members by working towards the vision outlined in the 2023-2028 Strategic Plan, most notably by expanding meaningful engagement, delivering tangible value for members across backgrounds and career stages (both through and beyond our flagship conference), and fostering inclusivity and elevating diverse voices. My previous experiences prime me to support the organization and provide stability during (un)foreseen challenges. It would be a privilege to have your vote.
Name: Dr. Jeff Graham
Institution: Texas A&M University
Position Sought: Vice President
Curriculum Vitae
Statement: My interest in serving as NASSM's Vice President is driven by a deep commitment to the Society's mission and a desire to give back to an organization that has been central to my professional life. I believe my service within NASSM has helped prepare me to fulfill the duties of this office.
As a former NASSM Secretary, I gained an intimate understanding of our governance, operational procedures, and the responsibilities of the executive leadership. This hands-on experience has prepared me to preside over meetings when necessary and to effectively chair the Constitution and Operating Code working group. Furthermore, my two years on the Governing Board provided me with a strategic perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing our Society. This background is crucial for providing "continuity and support" for the Board, as outlined in the operating codes.
My current service on the conference committee gives me vital insight into the Society's largest operational undertaking and the primary venue for member engagement. This is especially relevant experience for a VP, who must be prepared to support the Executive Director’s duties. I am eager to apply this comprehensive experience to support the President and ensure the continued stability and success of NASSM.
