Name: Lance Warwick, Phd Student
School: University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign
Position Running For: Student Board President

Statement: My name is Lance Warwick and I am a PhD student at the University of Illinois Urbana- Champaign. My research focuses on environmental issues in sport, and my advisor is Dr. Mikihiro Sato. Having previously served on the NASSM Sustainability Committee, I've witnessed many of the elements that make NASSM a wonderful organization. However, I also recognize that there are many ways that our organization can better serve the student membership. If elected to lead the Student Board, my priorities will be to 1) better connect with the wider student membership; 2) work to reduce financial barriers for students attending NASSM; 3) ensure that student voices are included in strategic planning initiatives. My overall goal is to strengthen the connection between the Society and the students who are represented.

Student Board Representatives

Name: Keegan Dalal, PhD Student
School: University of Massachusetts-Amherst
Position Running For: Student Board Representative

Statement: My name is Keegan Dalal, and I will be starting my third year of PhD studies at UMass Amherst this Fall. A quick background on me: I am Canadian (one among many of us studying abroad), a soccer/football fan of Chelsea FC, and currently attempting to win the New Yorker Caption Contest (no luck yet). Research-wise, I am working work alongside my advisor, Dr. Elizabeth Delia. I study sport consumer behavior through a qualitative lens with a particular interest in understanding how the intersection of politics and sport affects fandom. In this vein, I studied fans' responses to the Black Lives Matter movement in sport (highlighting how narratives entrenched in sport like 'sport as an escape' serve to distance race from individuals' opposition stances), and more recently, I explored fans' experiences boycotting the Qatar World Cup. NASSM Minneapolis is my second time attending the conference. Through these experiences, I believe that I have a good understanding of what NASSM represents and how NASSM can better meet the needs of attending students -- whether that be building professional networks, developing relevant skills, or even just more opportunities to socialize with other graduate students. In recognizing the diversity of experiences across all students, one strength I bring to the NASSM Student Representative Board is my willingness to listen to and collaborate with others. I believe that by actively engaging with student voices, we can create positive and relevant changes together over the course of the 2024-2025 academic year.
