NASSM names new Executive Director
NASSM Names Amanda Shumaker Executive Director
Following the conclusion of the NASSM Annual General Meeting in San Diego, the newly appointed Governing Board convened to finalize the executive director search process. During these meetings, the Board reviewed key procedural details and voted to approve the recommended shortlist of candidates submitted by the ED Hiring Committee. The Board also authorized NASSM President, Dr. Mike Naraine, to negotiate in good faith with the selected candidates on behalf of the organization.
Amanda Shumaker, the top candidate on the shortlist, accepted a three-year term following successful negotiations. The Governing Board officially ratified her contract during its August 2025 meeting. Amanda is a seasoned nonprofit association professional with over 15 years of experience, including roles as a meeting and conference planner and as Director of Operations for an organization specializing in association and conference management.
“She brings extensive experience in conference delivery, business continuity, and growth within academic contexts, and has already transitioned seamlessly into the organization. NASSM is poised for exciting, progressive developments in the years ahead.”
She shared that her motivation for accepting the role was to help guide NASSM’s continued growth and success for its members and the broader sport management community. Dr. Naraine expressed enthusiasm about the appointment, stating, “We’re very excited to have Amanda join NASSM and provide the operational leadership needed to execute our strategic plan. She brings extensive experience in conference delivery, business continuity, and growth within academic contexts, and has already transitioned seamlessly into the organization. NASSM is poised for exciting, progressive developments in the years ahead.”
Dr. Naraine also extended heartfelt thanks to Interim Executive Director, Dr. Bri Newland, for her dedicated service: “Our society is indebted to the incredible work of Dr. Bri Newland, who stabilized our core functions over the past year and a half. Without her, NASSM would be in a much more precarious situation.” He also acknowledged the contributions of the ED Search Committee: Drs. Laura Misener, Marvin Washington, Jamie DeLuca, Katie Reifurth, and soon-to-be Dr. Lance Warwick.
As Amanda settles into her new role, members can expect to hear more from her in the coming months. In the meantime, please join the NASSM Governing Board in warmly welcoming Amanda Shumaker as our new Executive Director!
