Position Sought: Governing Board Officer
Curriculum Vitae: Click here to view CV
Statement: With five years of dedicated service on the NASSM Marketing and Communications committee, including two years as chair, I've collaborated closely with various leaderships (3 different presidents, academic chairs, the first executive director) as well as engaged with internal and external stakeholders. Additionally, my involvement extends beyond the Marketing and Communications committee to include chairing the inaugural executive director search committee and serving as a member of the Janet B. Parks Research Grant Review Committee. These experiences have provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the organization's dynamics. My primary focus is on maximizing member benefits and ensuring inclusivity within NASSM for ALL sport management professionals. Having navigated academia both in a large research-focused university as a doctoral student and in small to medium-sized institutions as a faculty member, I possess insights into the diverse interests of NASSM members. With over a decade of membership across different levels within NASSM, I've greatly benefited from the community, and I am eager to give back. I believe my extensive experience and commitment to the organization make me well-suited for this position, and I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to continue contributing to NASSM's success.

Name: Brian Menaker, PhD
Institution: Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Kingsville, TX, USA (institution balanced between research and teaching)
Position Sought: Governing Board Officer
Curriculum Vitae: Click here to view CV
Statement:  I am qualified to serve in the position of Governing Board Officer of NASSM due to my extensive record of service to the profession and my institution. This includes experience as a member of NASSM, service to governing and editorial boards, professional service, and committee service. I currently serve as the Interim Associate Department Chair and Graduate Program Coordinator in Department of Health and Kinesiology at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, a Title V Hispanic Serving Institution population with approximately 70% of its undergraduates classified as first-generation college students. I have been a member of NASSM for over a decade and have been involved in different capacities. Recent activity includes two years on the committee to select the NASSM Service Learning Award, due to winning the award in 2022, prior service as a conference reviewer and session moderator. Additionally, I recently completed a two-year term as the Member-at-Large for Honors and Awards for the Sport and Recreation Law Association. This background allows to me to bring a perspective from a sport law and risk management organization, an area that is underrepresented in NASSM and on its Board of Directors. I also serve on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics. My institutional committee service includes serving on the Executive Committee of TAMU-Kingsville Faculty Senate, chair of the Committee on Committees, and Council on Institutional Effectiveness. I believe this sample of service shows my preparation and background for successful service on the NASSM Governing Board.

Name: Michael Odio, PhD
Institution: University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH, USA (research-focused)
Position Sought: Governing Board Officer
Curriculum Vitae: Click here to view CV
Statement: I feel that I can contribute through this position as someone who has held membership and been invested in the society since 2009 as a first-year doctoral student, and in that time have only missed one conference. At the annual conference I always make time to connect with new colleagues, especially doctoral students and those new to the society, including through the faculty-student mentoring initiative, and I always look to serve as a session moderator and attend the Annual General Meeting to stay current on the society’s development. Beyond the conference, I have served as a conference abstract reviewer every year since becoming faculty, served on several NASSM committees, and had an active role in the working group that proposed NASSM’s new governance structure. I am also involved from a scholarly perspective as part of the Sport Management Education Journal’s editorial team. If elected, I would focus on members and potential members who are often underrepresented (e.g., from teaching institutions, or studying in areas such as sport law, economics, and sociology), championing voices and ideas from the various member-driven committees, and to make NASSM more accessible to more people by advocating for initiatives beyond the conference. This can be achieved while still providing more of what the core NASSM membership expects from the society. More structural change is possible and needed. NASSM has more to offer to more people as a broadly-focused space for intersecting all parts of sport management research and education. Thank you for your consideration.

Name: Katherine Reifurth, PhD
Institution: Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ, USA (institution balanced between research and teaching)
Position Sought: Governing Board Officer
Curriculum Vitae: Click here to view CV
Statement: I feel qualified to serve as a NASSM Governing Board Officer due to my background in working with industry partners to add value to various offerings, whether that be for student engagement and learning in the classroom, adding value through an expanding network, bringing in industry partners for research, or creating opportunities for others to advance their professional skills. Utilizing my industry connections for new sponsor opportunities at the annual Conference would be of interest to me should I become a Board Officer. As a teaching professor at an R1 university, I want to ensure the voices of teaching professors are heard on the Board and that there is enough value in NASSM membership for those of us whose focus is not research. Having been a previous student representative on the Board, I would also like to continue to advocate for our student members and to find innovative ways to incorporate them into the NASSM community while keeping costs low for those most engaged. Being from a minority background as well, it is important for me to advocate for continued pushes for cultural and ethnic diversity in the NASSM membership, encourage greater female inclusivity and general membership in NASSM, and increase engagement across the board with NASSM Conferences, journals, and related events.

Position Sought: Governing Board Officer
Curriculum Vitae: Click here to view CV
Statement: With a deep-rooted eagerness to engage in and learn about the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) governing tasks, I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to serve on the Governing Board. My multifaceted background as an assistant to a journal editor, and my experience in teaching and research, have honed my ability to effectively liaise with various committees, ensuring productive collaboration and strategic alignment. My qualifications are further bolstered by an international perspective, gained through my experiences as an international student and professor. This background, combined with my active participation in a college-level committee focused on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) at the College of Education Diversity Advisory Committee, underscores my commitment to fostering an inclusive environment within NASSM. Additionally, my main research area in marketing and communications positions me well to contribute to NASSM’s strategic outreach and engagement initiatives. Leadership is a quality I have demonstrated through my role as president of the Korean Graduate Student Association at Georgia State University, where I led initiatives and orchestrated team efforts toward common goals. My personal interests in finance, technology, pedagogy, and strategic planning not only align with NASSM’s mission but also equip me with a unique skill set to contribute to its success. I am prepared to assist the President and Vice-President in steering NASSM towards achieving its objectives and am ready to take on the responsibilities required of a Governing Board Officer. Although I am currently a junior faculty member, I believe my perspective is invaluable to the Governing Board. The fresh insights and fervent passion of junior professors like myself can contribute significantly to NASSM’s vibrant and forward-thinking community, ensuring that the organization remains dynamic and responsive to emerging challenges and opportunities.

Name: Keegan Dalal, PhD Student
School: University of Massachusetts-Amherst
Position Running For: Student Board Representative

Statement: My name is Keegan Dalal, and I will be starting my third year of PhD studies at UMass Amherst this Fall. A quick background on me: I am Canadian (one among many of us studying abroad), a soccer/football fan of Chelsea FC, and currently attempting to win the New Yorker Caption Contest (no luck yet). Research-wise, I am working work alongside my advisor, Dr. Elizabeth Delia. I study sport consumer behavior through a qualitative lens with a particular interest in understanding how the intersection of politics and sport affects fandom. In this vein, I studied fans' responses to the Black Lives Matter movement in sport (highlighting how narratives entrenched in sport like 'sport as an escape' serve to distance race from individuals' opposition stances), and more recently, I explored fans' experiences boycotting the Qatar World Cup. NASSM Minneapolis is my second time attending the conference. Through these experiences, I believe that I have a good understanding of what NASSM represents and how NASSM can better meet the needs of attending students -- whether that be building professional networks, developing relevant skills, or even just more opportunities to socialize with other graduate students. In recognizing the diversity of experiences across all students, one strength I bring to the NASSM Student Representative Board is my willingness to listen to and collaborate with others. I believe that by actively engaging with student voices, we can create positive and relevant changes together over the course of the 2024-2025 academic year.
